"You know nothing" — why the best agents never stop learning

Mindset · September 20, 2026 · Randy Hourani

Pairs with the reel: I live by the philosophy of… you know nothing.

I live by a simple line: you know nothing. Not as self-hate — as posture. The moment an agent thinks they've graduated from learning, the market, the forms, the neighborhoods, and the client needs keep moving without them.

Humility in real estate

Every transaction has a detail you haven't seen in that combination before: a quirky association rule, a title wrinkle, a financing curveball, a family dynamic that changes negotiation. Humility keeps you curious instead of defensive. Clients feel the difference.

Pick other experts' brains

Lenders, title officers, inspectors, appraisers, contractors, and veteran agents have scars you can borrow. I ask questions on purpose. The fastest way to serve a buyer in Wayne, Oakland, or Macomb County is to know who knows — and to call them before ego writes the offer.

Cross-industry learning

Some of the best client-experience ideas don't come from real estate Instagram. They come from hospitality, sales craft, operations, and people who obsess over clarity. Steal the principle, adapt it to Michigan MLS reality, and leave the gimmicks behind.

Polish your craft

Contracts, negotiation tone, CMA judgment, listing prep, buyer education — craft is reps plus reflection. After closings I ask what I'd do differently. That's how "you know nothing" turns into "you know more than yesterday," which is the only durable edge.
